TOKYO -( Dow Jones )- Pioneer Corp. (6773.TO) said Wednesday it will not make a share dividend payment for the fiscal first half ending Sept. 30. The Japanese company, which last year pulled out of the plasma television display business to concentrate on car electronics, has been trying to turn itself around after years of losses. It has been raising funds to develop in-vehicle electronics by, among other methods, issuing new shares to companies like Honda Motor Co. (7267.TO). The company said it will decide whether to pay a year-end dividend at a later date. Pioneer also did not pay an interim dividend in the last fiscal year. Copyright © 2010 Dow Jones Newswires |

It wasn't until the advent of the Interstellar Boundary Explorer or IBEX, a NASA spacecraft launched in October 2008, that scientists have been able to see what the human eye cannot: the first-ever images of an electromagnetic crash scene in space. They can now witness how some of the solar wind's charged particles are being neutralized by gas escaping from Earth's atmosphere. |
“Rupert Murdoch To Launch New National Newspaper”. As headlines go, that’s up there with “DeLorean To Unveil New ‘Gull-Wing’ Car”, “Freddy Laker Reveals Trans-Atlantic Airline Plans” and “Charge! says Light Brigade” - reading it, you assume either there’s been some kind of historical glitch in your RSS reader or that someone is making a wry joke about extreme business hubris. Surely no-one, not even a dyed-in-the-wool newspaperman like Murdoch, would be stupid enough to launch a new national title in the current climate. But no - the story’s true , albeit with a technological twist that makes the move sound only 1% less suicidal: Murdoch’s new paper (launcing 'by the end of the year') will be available only on tablets like the iPad. And readers will have to pay to view it. Oh, Rupert, you crazy old... |

A few months back, we wrote a bit about Matt Ridley's new book called The Rational Optimist . I still haven't had a chance to read the book, but reader sehlat points us to an essay that Ridley has written for Reason Magazine that is adapted from the book, which is an absolute must read, on how innovation occurs . Many of the points won't surprise regular readers of Techdirt, since it talks about concepts and studies that we've discussed many times before. For example, it discusses some of the same research we recently wrote about how government funding of basic science research often does more harm than good for innovation. It also explains how money is often not a key ingredient in innovation. It's helpful, yes, but not the key ingredient. There's a nice bit on the fact, as discussed time and... |

This week’s episode of Speaking Of… (video below) features the founder/CEO of Halcyon Molecular, William Andregg. Andregg grew up in Arizona. There's a song by The Orb called Little Fluffy Clouds that describes the light-pollution-free Arizonan sky quite perfectly, with amazing clouds, sunsets and stars. Most Arizonans - at some point in their lives - will lay on the hood of their car and gaze towards the grandness of those fluffy clouds and the Milky Way, but most probably won't come to the same conclusions that William did about it all. |

Earlier today, Joel Johnson wrote an interesting post on Gizmodo simply titled ' You Are Not Your Phone .' It reads sort of like a modern day existential rant with the ultimate point being: we don't cater to fanboys, we tell it like it is, so shut up, it's just a phone. It's thought-provoking. It immediately reminded me of some of Tyler Durden's philosophy from Fight Club . In the film version, at one point Durden goes on a rant: You're not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet. You're not your fucking khakis. ' The things you own, end up owning you ,' Durden says at another point. Johnson's overall point isn't dissimilar. ' Remember these fuckers [the phones] work for us ,' Johnson notes early on. But I'm not... |

Even though urban cyclists face hazards such as exposure to car exhaust and the risk of traffic accidents, it's still far healthier to park the car and get on a bike. The health of the individual cyclists may improve as they drive less and exercise more, and the resulting reduction in exhaust emissions will benefit the entire community, according to a study published online June 30 ahead of print in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP). |
