BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese mobile telephone users must register their personal details to buy phone numbers under a rule that comes into force from Wednesday, in what the government calls an attack on spam but some see as a blow to privacy.

With the launch of Priority Inbox , a radical new way to sort mail, Google has hugely changed the way you can process and manage email. As Gmail Product Director Keith Coleman says, “Once you go priority, you never…

In May 2009, I wrote a post speculating about something called 'Magic Inbox.' What was so special about it? It was a reference found in the code of Gmail by the blog Google Operating System , and appeared to point to a new Gmail feature that would sort your email with the help of your social connections. Many of us wondered if such a feature would be launching soon. But that never happened. Well, until tonight, that is. Magic Inbox is the new Gmail Priority Inbox . Gmail Product Director Keith Coleman made that revelation during our meeting with him last week to discuss the new Priority Inbox. Magic Inbox had been in testing at Google for a long, long time leading up to this launch. ' We went through so many versions of this ,' Coleman said. In fact, Coleman noted that the idea to prioritze email based...

Sigh, not this again. ;) Recently Rand highlighted his surprise at how prevalent search spam is . But the big issue with search today is not the existence of spam, but how it is dealt with. For a long period of time Google spent much of their resources fighting spam manually. That worked when spammers were sorta poor and one hit wonders fighting on the edge of the web & few people knew how search worked. But as technology advances & 'spammers' keep building a bigger stock of capital eventually Google loses the manual game. Search engines concede the importance of SEO. It is now officially mainstream. Both Google and Microsoft offer SEO guides. Microsoft and Yahoo! have in-house SEO teams. Yahoo! purchased a content mill. Microsoft's update email about powering Yahoo! search results later...

Google has shared some results from recent research it conducted on consumers becoming friends/fans of brands on Facebook. According to these findings, close to half of Facebook users actually do 'friend' brands (the term is technically 'like' now), with 55% friending/liking zero brands. Google says that the biggest reason consumers are friending brands is for the possibility of discounts (25%). Brands might like the second reason even better though - to show others they support the brand (18%). What makes you 'like' a brand on Facebook?   Let us know . 'So when developing your social media strategy, keep in mind that consumers are looking primarily to receive promotions, with secondary goals of learning new information first and being entertained,' says Heidi Spector of the...

Push notifications, which allow you to receive alerts without having to manually open an application, are a big deal on mobile devices. They're important enough, in fact, that some startups have sprung up with the sole mission of making it easy for mobile developers to integrate them into their apps. One such startup is Urban Airship , and tonight the service is adding Android to its roster of supported devices (it already supports apps on both iPhone and Android). Developers have plenty of reasons to send out push notifications to users — they can include things like important messages about updates, breaking news, or gaming challenges (they're also good for keeping users engaged long after they've initially installed an app).

Many a post has come before this one on the special adventure that is pitching TechCrunch. And while most of our writers have their own personal preferences (Please don't call my cell before 7 a.m. unless you're Google, and you're buying Twitter. And you've made breakfast in bed.) there's definitely a right and wrong way to ping tips@techcrunch if you're a startup desperate for coverage. The following email thankfully fit into the former category.

PayPal , the eBay-owned electronic payments company, continues to run into operational issues in India. Earlier this year, the company had to suspend personal payment transactions from and to India, albeit temporarily , when the Reserve Bank Of India (RBI) concluded that PayPal was not in compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements. This morning, an email was sent to Indian users, notifying them that they would (very) soon be removing the ability to withdraw funds from accounts electronically.

A new report from Econsultancy suggests that email still beats social networks when it comes to marketing for e-commerce. The report says that over a third (37%) of consumers don't use a social networking site, and that those who have become a 'fan' or 'friend' of a company or brand online are still in the minority. Is email marketing more effective than social media for you? Let us know . The report is based on a survey of over 1,400 U.S. consumers, which the firm calls 'nationally representative.' While Facebook may think email is 'probably going away,'  marketers are still having a great deal of success with it. And just as increased mobile adoption continues to fuel social media use, it's not exactly hurting email. The report suggests that the rise of mobile will continue fuel...

As a bunch of you have been submitting, The Pirate Party, who recently took on hosting The Pirate Bay , has now announced plans to offer a 'Pirate ISP' service in Sweden , with the idea being to offer ISP service that maximizes privacy rights. The whole thing is a bit of a publicity stunt, of course, but it does seem to highlight the key point: which is that consumers do value these kinds of things, and for every attempt of certain industries to force ISPs to reveal info, there will always be incentives for others to set up ways for more privacy. I tend to cringe at the whole 'pirate ISP' name, because it will almost certainly be misunderstood and demonized, but The Pirate Party long ago decided to embrace that name, so I guess it's no surprise. We just wrote about Twitter's second deal from the new sales initiative, a TV. The new deal offers a 32-inch Vizio HDTV for $349.99 at Target, along with free shipping. But, it appears that the promotion code 'TGTTWEEET,' which user needs to enter in the last stage of the checkout process to receive the deal, is incorrect. I actually tried to purchase the TV twice with the code and was told by Target that the promotion code was invalid. Twitter Tweeted ten minutes ago (several hours after the deal was announced), saying that the code had an extra 'e' in it. As we wrote in our last post, the deal itself was fairly underwhelming. The TV is listed on Target as $388 (the original list price is $450), so you'll get a little less than $40 discount plus free shipping. On Amazon the TV is listed for $405...

WeShop is hoping to shake up the online shopping space with its platform that allows consumers to share purchase information on a free and anonymous basis. In private beta, WeShop allows consumers to pool their purchasing information which is available to other WeShop members. WeShop then analyzes and sells this data for vendors. Here's the catch-consumers have to give WeShop access to your e-mail account or your credit card number. That way, when you use your credit card for a purchase or if you buy something online and receive an email receipt, WeShop will flag it and insert it into your profile

Email overload is a problem that's as common as it is difficult to solve. Fortunately, everyone know it's a problem, and there are plenty of startups (and webmail providers themselves) looking to fix it. One recent entry to the space is AwayFind . The service, which opened to the public earlier this year, allows you to set up filters identifying the most important messages that hit your inbox— emails from coworkers, family members, or perhaps those that have 'IMPORTANT!' in the subject line. When one of these urgent messages comes in, AwayFind can alert you with a text message, phone call (that actually reads the message aloud) or IM. All of the site's alert settings are customizable: you can choose to receive an alert every time your boss emails you, or only when you get a new message in an especially...

If you're running a website, you've probably heard of A/B testing, which entails running multiple versions of a site at once and tracking which one performs best with users. But there's also a pretty good chance that you haven't actually gotten around to running those A/B tests — the prospect can be daunting, and if you aren't tech savvy, existing solutions can be confusing. Enter Optimizely , a Y Combinator -funded company with a great pedigree that's launching today in private beta. The service is looking to make all aspects of running an A/B test as easy as possible, and it looks quite impressive. In fact, when I showed it to our lead developer, he responded 'This is brilliantly simple. Can we get an invite?'. If you'd like an invite of your own, head to Optimizely's homepage, enter your email...

Apparently ten people who claim that they're on the official US government 'No Fly' list have sued the US government , claiming that it's illegal to be on such a list where there's no way for them to confront their accusers or get themselves off of the list. Some of the people in the lawsuit are US citizens and military veterans. There's a great quote about how these people are 'too scary to fly but not scary enough to arrest.' It does seem like a valid question, but legally I doubt the case will go anywhere. The government will claim national security, and that will basically be that.
